Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a stable light modulator causing small fluctuations in modulation efficiency with respect to changes in temperature and incident light wavelength, by decreasing the capacity of medium as approaching the entrance and exit ends of the light of light modulation medium and reducing the size of the electric field applied to the medium.
CONSTITUTION: A lithium tantalate crystal 11 is cut out in the vertical direction to X-axis, and is formed so as to transmit light in the direction of Y-axis. In the vicinity of light entrance and exit ends on the back side of the crystal 11 is disposed a dielectric thin film 18 of which thickness increases towards the entrance and exit ends, and a uniform, interdigital electrode 12 is placed over the entire surface of the crystal 11 thereon and earthed. When a voltage is applied to the electrode 12 from a signal generator 13, electric fields in the direction of X-axis are applied to the crystal 11 periodically in the direction of Y-axis. Since the capacity of thin film 18 becomes smaller as going nearer to the ends, the electric field applied to the crystal 11 becomes smaller as approaching the ends. Thus, by providing the dielectric thin film 18, the electric field applied may be gradually decreased towards the ends of the crystal 11, so that fluctuation in modulation efficiency may be reduced.
