Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare methylphenols in high yield the acid-decomposition of a mixture prepared by the liquid phase oxidation of aromatic compounds (e.g. cymene) with O2 and containing hydroperoxides and alcohols, with a specific amount of H2O2 in the presence of a catalyst and a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The oxidation mixture prepared by liquid phase oxidation of aromatic compounds having isopropyl groups and methyl groups, e.g. cymene, etc., with molecular O2 and containing tertiary hydroperoxides, primary hydroperoxides, tertiary alcohols and primary alcohols, is acid-decomposed with H2O2 (0.3W1.5mol on the basis of 1mol of the tertiary alcohol) in a lower aliphatic ketone solvent, e.g. acetone, etc., at 60W100°C for ≤2hr in the presence of an acidic catalyst and preferably a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol, etc., to give methylphenols.
EFFECT: Utilization of H2O2 is increased by carrying out the reaction under the selected conditions.
