Abstract
PURPOSE: To effectively remove sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides simultaneously by a method wherein a gas containing sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides is contacted with an activated charcoal under the presence of coexisted ammonia and under heating to convert nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and sulfur oxides to sulfur, ammonium sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas containing sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides of a steam-power station, a chemical factory or the like is heated to about 70W350°C, preferably 110W250°C under the presence of coexisted ammonia gas which is preferably 1W5mol to 1mol of nitrogen oxides contained in an exhaust gas and contacted with activated charcoal. Thereby, nitrogen oxides are reduce to harmless nitrogen by the reaction of a designated reaction formula I, II and sulfur oxides are collected on activated charcoal as sulfur and ammonium sulfate by the reaction of a designated reaction formula III, IV. The activated charcoal with reduced removal efficiency is easily regenerated by water washing at a temperature of about 20W90°C or heating to about 300W800°C and can be reused.
