Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title coating composition having excellent workability, and giving a coating film having excellent appearance without causing sagging and skimming, by polymerizing an acrylic monomer in a solution obtained by dissolving a specific acrylic polymer in a water-miscible solvent, and partially neutralizing the resulting polymer with an amine.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylic polymer having an acid value of 50W150 and a hydroxyl value of 25W100, is prepared by polymerizing a monomer selected from (a) an unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b) a (meth)acrylic acid ester, and (c) a vinyl monomer copolymerizable with (a) or (b), in a solution obtained by dissolving (A) a copolymer having an acid value of 15W40, a hydroxyl value of 25W100 and a number average molecular weight of ≥8,000, in (B) a water-miscible solvent (e.g. 3W6C aliphatic alcohols). The polymer thus obtained is neutralized with an amine in an amount necessary to neutralize more than 20% of the total acid equivalent of the polymer in the solution, and then added with water. The weight ratio of the polymer in the solution to the resulting polymer is 40/60W80/20, and the water content in the water-miscible solvent is 50W90wt%.
