Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a highly pure benzenepolycarboxylic acid ester by dissolving and removing an alkali metal salt of the above acid obtained as an intermediate prepared by the esterification of the benzenepolycarboxylic acid or its anhydride with a 7W11C aliphatic alcohol, in a specific solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A benzenepolycarboxylic acid having three or four carboxyl groups in the molecule, or its anhydride, is esterified with a 7W11C aliphatic monohydric alcohol (e.g. n-octanol, etc.) in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. sulfuric acid, etc. The reaction product is neutralized with an aqueous alkali solution and the excess raw material alcohol is removed. The esterification intermediate, i.e. an alkali metal of the benzenepolycarboxylic acid, etc. dissolved in the ester layer is eliminated by washing the layer with a water-containing lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol, etc., to give the highly pure benzenepolycarboxylic acid ester. The amount of the solvent is 0.1W10 times on the basis of the crude ester.
