Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A diphenylamine derivative I (R1 and R2 are lower alkyl; R3 is H, benzyl, etc.; n is 0, 1 or 2; the combination of R1=CH3, R3=H and n=0 is excluded).
EXAMPLE: Ethyl 2-{4-(2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylanilino)phenoxy} butyrate.
USE: A selective weed killer. It has remarkably excellent selective weed-killing action for grass weeds, e.g. a barn millet, etc., and it is almost harmless for broadleaved crops, and rice plants. etc. Extremely low phytotoxicity. Wide ranges for the application time, place, concentration, etc. It has antipyretic, hypotensive and antiinflammatory actions and antifungal activity, and is also useful as a medicine.
PROCESS: A compound II and a compound III (X is halogen; R' is benzyl, etc.) are heated and refluxed in an inert solvent usually for 3W6hr in the presence of an acid acceptor (e.g. K2CO3, etc.). The reaction solution is poured into cold water and extracted with an organic solvent to give the compound I.
