Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:1-Ethyl-6-fluoro-1, 4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-( 1-piperazinyl )-1, 8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid and its salt.
USE: Medicines having an antibacterial action on Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, drugs for animals and fishes, and food preservatives.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II: (R1 is H or protecting group; R2 is H or lower alkyl group) is ethylated with an agent, e.g. ethyl iodide, in an inert solvent, e.g. ethanol, and subjected to hydrogenolysis if necessary, to give the compound of formula I and its salt. An acid acceptor, e.g. an alkali carbonate, may further accelerate the reaction.
