Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve wear resistance, toughness, and machinability of high C-high speed tool steel, by decreasing V content and specifying simultaneously the ratio V/ (W+2Mo).
CONSTITUTION: The steel comprises, by weight, 0.8W1.2 % C, 0.1W0.6 % Si, 0.1W 0.6 % Mn, 3.0W5.0 % Cr, 1.0W3.0 % W, 7.0W10.0 % Mo, 2.2W2.8 % V, 4.0W 6.0 % Co, 0.01W0.10 % Zr, the balance being Fe and impurities, having a ratio by weight 0.15 ≥ V/(W+2Mo) ≥ 0.10. The high speed tool steel is easily melted and refined by a method used for other high speed tool steels, and is hot worked, i.e., forged, rolled in the same way as other high speed tool steels. The steel is softened by, after working, heat-treatment at 800W900°C and gradual cooling, and is hardened to HRC 63W68 by oil hardening at 1,160W1,250°C, then by tempering at 520W580°C.
