Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the captioned H2 with good efficiency by applying light to both photo detecting parts of the two electrolysis systems wherein a semiconductor electrode of Ag2S or HgS is used as a photo detecting part and the redox system of Fe3+/Fe2+ as a medium and producing H2, O2 respectively with the counter electrode and the photo detecting part of the other system.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolysis system I is formed of glass made electrolytic cells 1, 2. A sulfide semiconductor electrode 5 of AG2S or HgS is provided to the cell 1 and an insoluble electrode 6 to the cell 2. A cation transmission membrane 7 which passes H+ is mounted between the cells 1, 2. The electrolysis system II is of exactly the same constitution. The acidic aqueous solution of 0.05 mole K3Fe(CN)6, 0.05 mole K4Fe(CN)6 concentrations is circulated by a pump 15 in the circulating line formed by the cell 1, piping 13, cell 4, piping 14 to let the acidic aqueous solution be contained in the cells 2, 3. When light of 1000 nm or under is applied to the semiconductor electrodes 5, 8 from directions 20, 21 and raw water is properly supplied from the pipings 16, 18, then H2 is produced from the electrode 6, O2 produced in the semiconductor electrode 8 and Fe(CN)6 4- reproduced in the insoluble electrode 9.
