Abstract
PURPOSE:To evenly and well apply the captioned nitriding treatment by performing the heating and temperature raising of the objects to be treated and the control and maintenance of treating temperatures through evolution of heat of electric heating elements and generating the glow discharge at the heating and temperature raising or the initial period of ion nitriding under the specific high voltage. CONSTITUTION:AC voltage is applied from a power source 9 to heating elements 4 to let the same evolve heat in a vacuum reaction furnace 1 which is kept under H2 gas atmosphere by a treating gas mixing unit 13, following to which with an inside wall shield plate 5 as anode and a stage 14, e.g., the object to be treated 8, as cathode, DC voltage is applied to both electrodes by a power source 7 to allow glow discharge be generated and raise the temperature of the object 8 to be treated to the treating temperature. This glow discharge is high discharge voltage (about 700V) and low current. At the treating temperature, ion nitriding is accomplished by the glow discharge in the state wherein mixed gases of N2+H2, etc. are being supplied. At the initial period of ion nitriding, the glow discharge is generated for a short time under high discharge voltage above 450V. At this time, the output of the heating elements 4 is reduced by a temperature control unit 11 to maintain the treating time constant. Thereafter, the glow discharge is generated under relatively low discharge voltage.
