Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title carbon material in a high yield by adding free carbon or a carbon precursor to a cola depolymerization product obtd. by solvent- extracting coal and the like under press. in the presence of hydrogen; heat treating the carbon-added product to form a carbon precursor; and solvent-extracting the precursor to remove sol. matter after which the sol. matter-free precursor is molded and calcined.
CONSTITUTION: A mixed slurry of crushed coal and the like and a hydrocarvon solvent is dissolved by heating under press. in the presence of hydrogen. To the resulting coal depolymerization product is added 0.1wt% or more, pref. 1W10wt% of free carbon liberated from carbon black, coke particles or coal tar pitch and/or a carbonnaceous substance such as a carbon precursor produced by this method, and the carbon-added product is heat treated at 300W500°C, pref. a temp. within 20°C above the coal extraction temp. for 30W240min to form a carbon precursor. This precursor is extraction-separated with a solvent such as tar light oil, middle oil or tetrahydrofuran to remove sol. matter. The sol. matter-free precursor is then molded and calcined to obtain an isotropic high-density carbon material.
