Abstract

PURPOSE: A modified depolymerizate of specific coal is used as the raw material to produce said fibrous carbon with uniform properties and high strength in, high carbonization yield based on the raw material.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is dissolved in a bydrocarbon solvent under hydrogen pressure and the insoluble residue is separated off. Then, the hydrocarbon solvent is distilled off to give coal depolymerizate. The product is further extracted with a nonaromatic solvent to remove the extractable components, thus giving said modified coal depolymerizate. The extraction with the nonaromatic solvent is effected in a mild condition so that the heat polymerization is inhibited. The operation removes the compoents of low softening points to give a modified coal depolymerizate with high softening point, which can readily be made into fibers and also readily made infusible. The process of solvent extraction required milder conditions than the heat treatment process and distillation process and remarkably saves the operation costs.
