Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds useful as midicines, in high purity and yield, by converting a mixture of cis- and trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acids to the sodium salts, and separating the mixture into cis and trans species.
CONSTITUTION: An equimolar amount of dilute aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide is added to cis- and trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid mixture to convert the acids into sodium salts, and the sodium salt of cis-1-methyl- 4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid is precipitated by cooling. This salt is separated by filtration and the precipitate is made acidic with dilute hydrochloric acid, whereby free cis-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid is obtained. The trans-1-methyl-4-isohexylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid is obtained by making the filtrate acidic with dilute hydrochloric acid.
