Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a controlling agent e.g., a herbicide, insecticide, germicide, etc. or a raw material of dye, drug, etc. industrially and economically advantageously in high yields, by fluorinating a β-trichloromethylpyridine with water-free hydrogen pluoride in a gaseous phase.
CONSTITUTION: A β-trichloromethylpyridine, e.g., 2-chloro-5-trichloromethylpyridine, etc., shown by the formula I (n is 1W3) is reacted with water-free hydrogen fluoride in a gareous phase in an inert solvent, e.g., CCl4 or without a solvent preferably in the presence of active carbon at 200W700°C, preferably at 300W500°C, for 1W100 seconds, preferably for 2W20 seconds to give a β-trifluoromethylpyridine, e.g., 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine, shown by the formula II. The amount of water-free hydrogen fluoride is 3W15mol, preferably 5W9mol based on 1mol of the compound shown by the formula I. The presence of active carbon increases a yield.
