Abstract

PURPOSE: The esterification is effected by reaction of a cis-epoxysuccinate salt and an alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid, thus producing title compound used as a raw material for detergent builder, crosslinking high polymers, polyamides, etc., in high yield with no formation of by-products.
CONSTITUTION: The acid or normal salt of cis-epoxysuccinic acid, e.g., disodium cis-epoxysuccinate or sodium hydrogen cis-epoxysuccinate is made to react with a lower alcohol as methanol in the presence of sulfuric acid under conventional conditions, thus producing said cis-epoxysuccinic ester in almost 100% yield with no formation of by-products. Usually, the cis-epoxysuccuinic acid is separated from the reaction mixture in the form of the above salt in the practical production and the direct use of the salt for the esterification can omit one process for the formation of the free acid, resulting in the advantage on facility and economics.
