Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:An α-(2-pyridyl)arylacetaldehyde of formulaI(R1 is H or 1W4C alkyl) or its enol isomer.
EXAMPLE: α-(2-Pyridyl)phenylacetaldehyde.
USE: A raw material of α-(2-pyridyl)arylacetonitrile of formula II (a raw material of disopyramide useful as a remedy for arrhythmia). It can be converted to be compound of formula II economically, in high yield.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIor its enol isomer is prepared by reacting a 2-benzyl-pyridine compound of formula III with a formic acid ester such as methyl formate, ethyl formate, etc. in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium hydride) at 10W120°C, and neutralizing the product.
