Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare aromatic aldehydes or ketones useful as perfumes, medicines, pesticides and their intermediates, selectively, in high yeild, by the oxidation-decomposition of an α,β-unsaturated aromatic compound in the presence of an Ru catalyst and an oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: An α,β-unsaturated aromatic compound is decomposed by the oxidation with an oxidizing agent in the presence of Ru metal or its compound as a catalyst to give an aromatic aldehyde or ketone. The amount of the catalyst is 0.0001W0.005mol on the basis of 1mol of the raw material. The oxidizing agent is one or more compounds selected from chlorine and water, a halogenoic acid and its salt, and peracetic acid. The α,β-unsaturated aromatic compound, is, e.g. styrene, p-methylstyrene, p-methoxystyrene, and isosafrol.
