Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover the title compound for direct polymerization in high purity, in a simple operation and high purification effect, by residence of hydrous hot acetic acid suspension of terephthalic acid crystal displacement-washed slowly in a continuous countercurrent contact column, in an agitated vessel for a specific time at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The suspension containing terephthalic acid, obtained by oxidation of an aromatic compound in the liquid phase with a molecular oxygen-containing gas, is brought into slow continuous countercurrent contact in a column with hydrous acetic acid at a column temperature (T) not lower than the oxidation one by 10°C and the rising speed of the acetic acid between 0.005cm/sec and 5cm/sec, for an average residence time of terephthalic acid crystals between 30 seconds and 10 minutes. The hot acetic acid suspension of terephthalic acid crystals as a downflow from the column is kept in an agitated vessel at a temperature not lower than T in the column by 10°C for 5W80 minutes on an average. This simple operation a permits high purification effect and a recovery of high-purity terephthalic acid.
