Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert a carbon-contg. org. cpd. into methane in a high yield by contacting the cpd. to an O2-contg. gas at high temp. and press. followed by anaerobic methane fermentation.
CONSTITUTION: A carbon-contg. org. cpd. is dissolved or suspended in water and contacted to an O2-contg. gas such as air at high temp. and press., i.e. 150W300°C and 20W200kg/cm2. Thus, most of the cpd. can be oxidized to a carbon-contg. org. cpd. such as lower aliph. carboxylic acid, aldehyde or alcohol having superior biodegradability and showing high reaction rate in anaerobic methane fermentation. This oxidized cpd. is then subjected to known anaerobic methane fermentation treatment to be converted into methane gas. As the above-mentioned carbon- contg. org. cpd., pulp waste liquor, various agricultural wastes, garbage, waste paper, etc. can be used.
