Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance heat resistance and mechanical strength, and to reduce transmission loss, by using the hardened film of partial hydrolysis condensation product of specified alkyl trialkoxysilane for the clad prats of a polymer clad type optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A solution of partial hydrolysis condensation product represented by the formula shown (R<1>, R<2> are 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, vinyl, aryl, or the like and R<2> is 1-4C alkyl), such as methyl-trimethoxysilane is coated on glass fiber and heat hardened to form a clad layer. Then, nylon 12 or the like is extruded and allowed to cover the clad layer, thus permitting efficient production of optical fiber superior in close contact performance between the cores and clad parts, and excellent in light transmission loss characteristics.
