Abstract
PURPOSE: The polymerization of acrylamide using an azo compound catalyst is effected in the presence of a peroxide in suce a small amount that it shows no polymerization activity, whereby the low temperature polymerization is made easy and a high molecular weight polymer with good solubility and high storage stability for long periods of time is produced.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylamide (a), about 100W2000ppm, based on the monomer aqueous solution, of (b) an azo compound as 2,2'-azobispropane hydrochloride, and (c) about 0.1W10, preferably 1W5ppm of (c) a peroxide as potassium persulfate or t-butyl peroxide as polymerization accelerator are dissolved in ion-exchanged water and they are polymerized at about 0W40, preferably 10W30°C. Further, as the monomer, dimethylaminoethyl acrylate or methacrylate, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile can be used as well as acrylamide.
