Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily prepare low phosphorus steel by a melting method without losing Cr or the like by contacting molten slag which is based on Ca fluoride compound and added by a predetermined amount of one kind of rare-earth metal such as Ce, La or two or more thereof with steel or its alloy in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel or molten alloy and molten slag obtained by adding 1W50wt% of one kind or two or more kinds of rare-earth metal selected from Ce, La which is easily used and has high b.p. are contacted and reacted in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to dephosphorize molten steel or molten alloy. Because reaction is carried out in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, rare-earth metal within molten slag is prevented from oxidation and loss as well as reduction of dephosphorization capacity is inhibited and oxidative decomposition of formed phosphorus compound is prevented. By using nonoxidative slag, dephosphorization effect can be enhanced without oxidizing and losing alloy component such as Cr, Si or the like.
