Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture low-carbon Al-killed steel at low cost without using expensive low-carbon Fe-Mn alloy by a method in which a high-carbon Fe-Mn alloy is added to molten steel coming out of a steel making furnace and then aluminum is added to the molten steel in the manufacture of a low-carbon Al-killed steel.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of a low-carbon Al-killed steel from molten steel, a high-carbon Fe-Mn alloy is added to the molten steel from a steel making furnace, e.g., convertor, etc., where carbon present in the high-carbon Fe-Mn alloy is reacted with excessive oxygen present in the molten steel, formed in oxidizing refining process involving oxidation, decarburization, etc., carbon is decarburized by oxidation, and at the same time the oxygen present in the molten steel is also removed. At this time, a deoxidizing agent, e.g., Al, Si, etc., containing no C, is added to the molten steel for sufficient killing. Thereby, by using an inexpensive high-carbon Fe-Mn alloy, a low-carbon Al-killed steel can be manufactured.
