Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a high-hardness, tough cutting material by a method wherein a specific proportion of powdered high density phase BN, ceramic material, and metal as binder are mixed, molded, and sintered under high pressure and high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: 40W96.5Vol% of high density phase BN consisting of 10vol% or more of Wurz ore type BN (WBN) or WBN and 90vol% or less of cubic system BN (CNB); 3W50vol% of one or more of ceramic materials selected from nitrides, oxides, borides, and carbides of various metals; 0.5W20vol% of metal as binder consisting of the first group metals such as Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Fe, etc., the second group metals such as Mo, W, V, etc. and the third group of metals such as Al, Mg, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, etc. are thoroughly mixed in powdered condition. The mixture is molded in a proper shape and sintered under pressure of 4W7GPa and at 1000W 2300°C. This provides an extremely high hardness, toughness, cutting material suitable for cutting quenched steel material.
