Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of polymers, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes, in a quantitative yield, by halogenating acrylonitrile in the presence of a specific catalyst, and eliminating hydrogen halide from the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is halogenated directly with a halogenating agent (e.g. chlorine gas) in the presence of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydrogen phosphate in dark, and then heated to eliminate the hydrogen halide from the product thereby obtaining the objective 2-halogenoacrylonitrile. The reaction is carried out usually in the absence of solvent. The reactions are suitable not only for a large scale production but also a small scale production.
