Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an on-line measurement while a wire runs by a system wherein a coherent beam is projected to the wire, and a wire size is obtained from luminous intensity of a resultant optical image.
CONSTITUTION: A beam from laser light source 1 turns to a parallel luminous flux beam 3 through a telescope 2 and is applied to a wire 4. The parallel luminous flux beam 3 is partly intercepted by the wire 4 to reach a screen 5. A central part of the screen 5 is shaded by the wire 4 to remain black, and a small diffraction stripe sppears on its periphery. An image on the screen 5 is enlarged by a microscope 6 and given on the surface of a line sensor 7 arraying a light detector in one direction. An output of each light detector is extracted in sequence through a driving circuit 8, amplified 9 and then read in a signal processing unit 10, thus obtaining a size of the wire 4.
