Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a high density thin structure of fibrous activated carbon by winding a bulky structure of fibrous activated carbon impregnated with an aqueous binder soln. around a porous core tube, coating the bulky substrate with a heat shrinkable substance, and drying the resulting structure by heating.
CONSTITUTION: A bulky stucture such as a nonwoven fabric or a felt of fibrous activated carbon is impregnated with an aqueous soln. of a binder such as polyvinyl alcohol or gum arabic, dried to about 150W200% water content, and wound around a porous core tube made of steel sheet, wire net or the like. A heat shrinkable substance such as a polypropylene film is then wound around the bulky substrate to coat and tightly seal the substrate, and the resulting structure is heated at about 130W150°C for about 2W4min with a heat shrinking apparatus to increase the adhesive strength of the bulky substrate to the shrinkable substance. After boring air holes in both end parts of the substance, the structure is placed in a dryer and dried by heat treatment at about 120W130°C for about 25W30min.
