Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an optical fiber with superior water resistance and less transmission loss at a high spinning speed by subjecting an optical fiber to a specified surface treatment immediately after spinning and coating the fiber with a rubbery elastic body and a thermoplastic resin pipe or tape in succession.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber is treated to convert surface silanol groups into hydrophobic ones, thereby preventing the strength of the fiber from lowering in the presence of water. For example, a compound such as methyltrichlorosilane forming a chemical bond between it and a silanol group is brought into contact with an optical fiber immediately after spinning to surface treat the fiber. The fiber is then coated with a rubbery elastic body such as silicone rubber blended with a curing agent, a vulcanizing agent or the like, and a thermoplastic resin tape or pipe of polyamide or the like is fixed on the fiber and bonded by heat softening to form a coated layer.
