Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a leak of ultraviolet rays when an outer tube is damaged in a metal vapor discharge lamp of double tube construction in which a luminous tube is enveloped with the outer tube, by connecting in series a semiconductor consisting of oxygen-short indefinite ratio compound with the luminous tube and providing said semiconductor in the outer tube. CONSTITUTION:A luminous tube 2 is housed in an outer tube 1, then one main electrode 3 of the luminous tube 2 is connected to a lead wire 8 while the other main electrode 4 is connected to an interval conductor wire 6, combined with use of a support, by interposing in series an oxide semiconductor 10. While an auxiliary electrode 5 is connected to the internal conductor wire 6 through an auxiliary resistor 9. The oxide semiconductor 10 is made, for instance, from oxygen short compound of titanium dioxide having conductivity and mounted in such a manner as to be heated to not less than 300 deg.C when lighting. In the outer tube 1 inert gas is sealed, and the semiconductor 10 can hold its conductivity, but when the outer tube is damaged the atmospheric air flows in a lamp, then the semiconductor 10 is oxidized to increase its resistance value and turn off the luminous tube 2.
