Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture the titled preform with extralow transmission loss by putting a fluoride glass rod for a core obtd. by pouring into a vertically splittable mold, annealing for a long time and furnace cooling into a fluoride glass tube for a clad obtd. by a similar method. CONSTITUTION:Fluoride glass such as a mixture of ZrF4, BaF2 and GdF2 is melted and poured into the mold composed of 2 semicylindrical outer frames 1, 2 and preheated close to the glass transition temp. The mold in then annealed at the preheating temp. and furnace cooled to form a glass rod for a core. On the other hand, similar fluoride glass is melted and poured into the cylindrical hollow part between 2 semicylindrical outer frames 11, 12 and 2 semicylindrical cores 15, 15' after assembling them, and a glass tube for a clad is formed by a similar method. By putting said glass rod into the glass tube, the desired preform for an optical fiber transmitting infrared rays is manufactured. This preform can transmit infrared rays of 2-6mum wavelengths.
