Abstract

PURPOSE: A mixture of hydrocarbon is catalytically hydrogenated under such conditions that benzene becomes substantially free and the content of aromatic hydrocarbons drops to a level lower than a specific value and brought into contact with a molecular sieve to produce normal paraffins used as a starting material of detergent.
CONSTITUTION: A 5W30C hydrocarbon mixture containing normal paraffins, isoparaffins and aromatic hydrocarbons is catalytically hydrogenated under such conditions that benzene becomes substantially free and the content of aromatic hydrocarbons decreases lower than 0.1wt%. Namely, the mixture is prehydrogenated and then subjected to catalytic hydrogenation of effect the hydrogenation of aromatic rings mainly. This treatment increases the adsorption and desorption ability of the molecular sieve. The resultant hydrocarbon mixture is brought into contact with a molecular sieve, preferably a zeolite with an average pore diameter of 5Å, for adsorption. Then, the desorption is effected to produce normal paraffins with less content of aromatics.
