Abstract

PURPOSE: In the separation of normal paraffin from a hydrocarbon mixture by using a molecular sieve, an aromatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point different from that of normal paraffin is added to the mixture and they are brought into contact with the molecular sieve to produce normal paraffin used as a starting material with low content of aromatic hydrocarbon.
CONSTITUTION: A 5W30C hydrocarbon mixture containing normal paraffins, isoparaffins and aromatic hydrocarbons is combined with an aromatic hydrocarbon having a different boiling point from the normal paraffins such as benzene, alkylbenzene, fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, nonfused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon such as distyrenated xylene, oligomers from 9W10C aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbon fraction or styrene oligomers. Then, the resultant mixture is brought into contact with a molecular sieve with an average pore diameter of 5Å for adsorption. Then, normal paraffins are desorbed, resulting in low aromatic hydrocarbon content.
