Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover a Pt group metal from a used catalyst in a high yield by converting the metal into its water-soluble salt by reaction with an alkali metallic salt and gaseous chlorine with heating after which the salt is cooled in a flow of gaseous chlorine and extracted with an aqueous solvent.
CONSTITUTION: When Pt group metal such as Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt is recovered from a catalyst having the metal supported on a carrier such as alumina or silica, the catalyst is impregnated with a soln. of an alkali metallic salt such as NaOH or NaCl, dried and heated to ≥500°C in a gaseous chlorine atmosphere to convert the Pt group metal into its salt soluble in an aqueous solvent by reaction with the alkali metallic salt and gaseous chlorine. In order to prevent thermal decomposition, the soluble salt is cooled to ≤400°C in a gaseous chlorine atmosphere, and then it is extracted with an aqueous solvent such as hydrochloric acid, aqua regia or water to recover the Pt group metal in a high yield.
