Abstract

PURPOSE: To coat an optical fiber with a coating agent by means of coating dies causing little liq. level change and not accelerating the hardening of the agent by feeding the agent into the circular space between the outer and inner tubes of the dies to allow the agent to enter the liq. reservoir from through holes and sticking the agent to the fiber surface.
CONSTITUTION: Coating agent 14 fed into the circular space between outer tube 8 and inner tube 9 of coating dies 7 enters liq. reservoir 11 from through holes 13, sticks to the surface of running optical fiber 15, and leaves reservoir 11. As the agent is reduced, agent 14 is replenished from holes 13. The agent in reservoir 11 moves like arrows 16, 17, 18. Since agent 14 has considerably high viscosity, the amount of agent 14 passing through holes 13 corresponds to the amount of agent 14 reduced in reservoir 11, and the liq. surface of reservoir 11 is almost fixed. Agent 14 continuously flows into reservoir 11, so a temp. rise due to the heat of fiber 15 is minimized, preventing the acceleration of hardening.
