Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:2-Azetidinone derivatives of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, 2-oxoazetidinyl; R' is phenyl, thienyl, phridyl, isoxazole, where they may substituted with halogen atoms or lower alkyls). EXAMPLE:E-3-[(2-Oxoazetidin-4-yl)thio]-3-methylthio-1-phenyl-2-propen- 1-one. USE:medicine: they have antibiotic activity as well as inhibition activity against beta- lactamase. They also are used as a synthetic intermediate for compounds having the same activities. The combined use with penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics increases the antimicrobial activity. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of 4-acyloxyazetidin-2-one of formula II with a dithio compound of formula III is effected in the presence of an alkali hydroxide to give the compound of formula I.
