Abstract
PURPOSE: A coal is depolymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent under pressurized hydrogen and specific conditions, then melt spun into fibers, which are made infusible and carbonized to produce high-quality titled fibers because of their void freeness, high surface smoothness and uniformity.
CONSTITUTION: A coal is depolymerized in a hydrocarbon solvent under conditions that are represented by the equation where the pressure of hydrogen is kept between 20W250kg/cm2G, the reaction temperature is given as T in °C, which ranges from 380 to 470°C, and the time as t in min. The insoluble solid part is removed and the solvent is distilled off to give a coal depolymerized product. The product is melt spun, made infusible, carbonized and subjected to graphitization to produce the objective carbon and graphite fibers. The coal depolymerized product preferably contains 40W70wt% of benzene-insoluble fraction, has an atomic ratio of less than 0.05 oxygen/carbon and gives 73wt% or higher carbonization yield and 2.0 or lower average length of alkyl side chains on aromatic rings.
