Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is a selective herbicide in high yield, by reacting an N-benzylbenzenesulfonamide derivative with an organic halide in the presence of a specific catalyst and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or halogen; R2 and R3 are Hs or methyls, however, are not H; R4 is H, methyl, methoxy or halogen) is reacted with a compound of the formula R-X (R is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; X is halogen) in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt, e.g. a benzyltrialkyl ammonium halide, as a catalyst and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal gydroxide and an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, at 10W120°C to afford a compound of formula II.
EFFECT: The objective compound effective against a barnyard grass which is a very harmful weed and nontoxic to a rice plant can be obtained by simple procedures.
