Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a remedy for cardiopathy such as arrythmia, etc., easily, in high yield, in a short time, at a low temperature, by treating isopropylamine with a weak acid, and reacting thus stabilized isopropylamine with a specific epoxy compound.
CONSTITUTION: An epoxy compound of formula I (Ar is 1-naphthyl or 4-indolyl) is made to react with a stabilized isopropylamine to afford 1-aryloxy-3-isopropylaminopropan-2-ol of formula II. The stabilization of isopropylamine is carried out by treating the amine with stoichiometric neutralization amount of organic monobasic or dibasic acid having a 1W10C straight or branched chain, or substituted or nonsubstituted aromatic or heterocyclic group, or an inorganic weak acid such as boric acid, monoalkali phosphate, etc., as an agent for preventing the vaporization of a low-boiling amine and promoting the ring-opening reaction of epoxy ring. The reaction temperature is 20W50°C. The amount of the amine is as low as 1W1.3 times mole of the epoxy compound.
