Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula (R is cycloalkyl) and its salt.
EXAMPLE: α-Cyclohexylthiophenylacetic acid.
USE: A precursor of penicillin and cephalosporin compounds.
PROCESS: The compound of formula is prepared by reacting α-bromophenylacetic acid with cycloalkyl mercaptan or its alkali metal salt in an aqueous medium at room temperature or below. When cycloalkyl mercaptan is used as a raw material, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide sufficient to form the alkali metal salt of the cycloalkyl mercaptan.
