CONSTITUTION:A cycloconverter-type power converter 3 is controlled so that the ratio between the voltage and the frequency is kept approximately constant in a low speed region. When the speed of an induction motor 1 has reached the vicinity of the speed limit in the frequency control, the output signal of an oscillator 4 is turned off and one group of thyristors which are connected in reverse parallel one another for each phase is selected from the thyristors constituting the power converter 3. Thereafter, only the firing angles of these three groups of reverse parallel thyristors 3a-3f are controlled. In this constitution, since the speed of the induction motor is directly proportional to the power-supply frequency, the high speed operation of the induction motor with high efficiency can be performed.
