Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an amorphous magnetic material having magnetic characteristics about equal to those given by annealing in a magnetic field as rapidly cooled and superior toughness by rapidly cooling molten metal or molten alloy in a magnetic field to make it amorphous.
CONSTITUTION: A mother alloy having the composition of Fe80P15C7 is put into quartz nozzle 1 and melted by heating with high frequency induction coil 3. Melt 2 is sprayed upon the outer surface of copper roll 5 rotating at a high speed to manufacture amorphous ribbon 4 by rapid cooling. At this time, the sprayed melt is cooled in magnetic field 7 formed by placing permanent magnets 6 until ribbon 4 is cooled to at least the Cruie point or below. Ribbon 4 is rapidly cooled in field 7 almost parallel with its longitudinal direction. As a result, the obtd. amorphous alloy ribbon can be bent by 180° and has superior mechanical characteristics since it does not pass through an annealing process. In case the above-mentioned cooling process is carried out in a magnetic field almost perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of ribbon 4, ribbon 4 having similar characteristics is obtd.
