Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture uranium dioxide powder and plutonium dioxide powder by concentrating uranyl nitrate and plutonium nitrate in a starting material soln. in a vacuum evaporation crystallizer and heat denitrating the resulting slurry with a microwave heater.
CONSTITUTION: A soln. contg. uranyl nitrate and plutonium nitrate is introduced into vacuum evaporation crystallizer 2 through flow rate regulation valve 1. In crystallizer 2 water and nitric acid are evaporated and exhausted to concentrate the soln., whereby the uranyl nitrate and plutonium nitrate are deposited to form a slurry. This slurry is sent to storage tank 6 with pump 5 through flow rate regulation valve 4 and fed to microwave heater 8 through flow rate regulation valve 7. By applying microwaves from oscillator 9, the slurry is denitrated by heating to obtain oxides of uranium and plutonium.
