Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve startability of the diesel engine, by providing a "starting" detecting means, a "complete explosion" detecting means and a "warm-up" detecting means in a preheating system used for starting the engine, and connecting a timer to each of these detecting means, so that combustion chambers can be heated to meet with the temperature of intake air.
CONSTITUTION: A key switch 2 has an OFF-position 4, an ON-position 6 and a "start" position 8 and it is connected via a control means 12 to glow plugs 14, 16, 18, 20 provided in respective combustion chambers. The control means 12 includes the first timer 26 for determining the warm-up time from the signal given from the "warm-up" detecting means 24, the second timer 28 for feeding current for a predetermined while after the first timer 26 is set into operation, and the third timer 32 which is operated for a predetermined while by the "complete explosion" detecting means 30 for detecting the complete explosion of engine. When the key switch 2 is in its ON-position 6, current is supplied to the glow plugs for the operative periods of the respective timers, so that the engine can be started readily even in an extremely cold district.
