Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal compsn. which can be driven at a low voltage and in which a low-temperature response is rapid and arbitrary clear color can be developed on a white ground, by a method wherein four specified cpd. are added to a phenylcyclohexyl carbonate liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: A stilbene cpd. of formula II (wherein R3, R4 are 1W8C straight- chain alkyl, alkoxy; X1 is halogen, cyano), a cyclohexyl carbonate cpd. of formula III (wherein R5, R6 are R3; X2 is X1), a biphenyl ester cpd. of formula IV (wherein R7, R8 are R3; X3 is X1) and a phenyl ester cpd. of formula V (wherein R9, R10 are R3; X4, X5 are X1), are added to a phenylcyclohexyl carbonate liquid crystal of formula I (R1, R2 are 1W6C straight-chain alkyl; ring H is cyclohexane ring) to obtain a negative nematic liquid crystal for positive display guest-host, which can be driven at 6 volts and has sufficient response characteristics at 0°C.
