Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce titled, multipurpose, moldable composition, by polymerizing, at low temperature, an aromatic diamine with an aromatic diacid halide in an amide type solvent and in the presence of a halogenated hydrocarbon.
CONSTITUTION: A solution comprising an aromatic diamine and an amide type solvent such as dimethylacetamide is cooled to a low temperature, and an aromatic diamine, an equimolar amount of an aromatic diacid halide and a necessary amount of a halogenated hydrocarbon such as dichloromethane are added to the solution. The resulting mixture is polymerized in solution at low temperatures thereby to produce an aromatic polyamide solution. Then, at least part of the hydrogen halide formed during the polymerization step is neutralized with a neutralizing agent such as a hydroxide or oxide of an alkaline earth or alkali metal, so that 5W60wt%, based on the aromatic polyamide, of an alkaline earch or alkali metal halide salt is formed, thereby to produce a composition in which the aromatic polyamide (P), the amide type solvent (S) and the halogenated hydrocarbon (H) are present in amounts which fall in the range defined by A, B, C and D in the diagram.
