Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful for the preparation of pharmaceuticals, etc., in high purity, by oxidizing p-xylene with O2-containing gas in liquid phase, removing the unreacted xylene from the product by distillation, and heating the product in the presence of sulfuric acid, followed by sublimation or steam-distillation.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction product obtained by the liquid-phase oxidation of p- xylene with an O2-containing gas is distilled to remove the unreacted xylene. 0.3W 5pts.wt. of ≥90wt% sulfuric acid is added to 100pts.wt. of the crude toluic acid obtained, and the mixture is heated at 180W250°C and then fused at 200W250°C. The fused product is subjected to sublimation or steam-distillation under the introduction of 0.01W3pts.wt., based on 100pts.wt. of the fused product, of an inert gas (e.g. superheated steam, nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide gas, etc.), to give, easily and economically, the high purity p-toluic acid which is a starting material of fluoresent dyes, pesticides, etc. and is esp. useful for the preparation of pharmaceuticals.
