Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high purity, by oxidizing p-xylene with O2-containing gas in liquid phase, removing the unreacted xylene from the product by distillation, and heating the product in the presence of sulfuric acid and then a high boiling alcohol, followed by sublimation or distillation.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction product obtained by the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene with an O2-containing gas is distilled to remove the unreacted xylene. 0.3W5pts.wt. of ≥90wt% sulfuric acid is added to 100pts.wt. of the crude p-toluic acid obtained, and the mixture is heated at 180W250°C. 100pts.wt. of the resulting crude p-toluic acid is added with 0.1W10pts.wt. of an alcohol having a boiling point of ≥180°C, and heat-treated at 180W250°C. The product is distilled or sublimed to obtain, easily, high-purity p-toluic acid which is a raw material of fluorescent dyes, pesticides, photo-sensitizing dyes, etc., and is esp. useful for the preparation of pharmaceuticals.
