Abstract
PURPOSE: Titled suspension stabilizer which is particularly suitable in suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride and which can provide particulate PVC having a sharp particle size distribution and a high porosity, cmprising a partially saponified PVA containing a specific amount of both hydrophobic groups and anionic hydrophilic groups on its side chains.
CONSTITUTION: A modified PVA, saponification degree 60W90mol%, having at its side chains, 0.01W5mol% of hydrophobic groups and 0.02W10mol% of anionic hydrophilic groups is obtained, for example, by copolymerizing vinyl acetate, a hydrophobic group-containing vinyl compound such as an alkyl vinyl ether and an anionic hydrophilic group-containing vinyl compound such as an aliphatic unsaturated acid, and then saponifying the copolymer. One hundred (100)pts.wt. of vinyl chloride is introduced into a vessel containing (i) 100W300pts.wt. of water, (ii) 0.01W0.3pt.wt. of said modified PVA and (iii) 0.01W0.3pt.wt. of a polymerization initiator to produce particulate PVC.
