Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a dispersion stabilizer giving a suspension having approximately similar and sharp particle size distribution, by alkali-saponifying a copolymer composed of a carboxyl-contg. monomer and a vinyl ester to give a specified modified polyvinyl alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: The titled dispersion stabilizer comprises polyvinyl alcohol obtained by alkali-saponification of a copolymer composed of a vinyl ester and a carboxyl group contg. monomer selected from ethylenically unsaturated polybasic carboxylic acids, their anhydrides and ethylenically unsaturated polybasic carboxylic esters in which one or more carboxyl groups are free, and 5mol% or less said carboxyl group-contg. monomer is contained, and the degree of saponification of the vinyl ester unit is between 20 and 90mol%. Most pref. vinyl ester is vinyl acetate, and pref. carboxyl group-contg. monomer may be itaconic acid or a mixt. thereof.
