Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled adhesive in which standing stability, mixing stability, mixing stability, initial tack and washability are improved, by a method wherein a specified polyvinyl alcohol copolymer is incorporated into a formalin condensation resin adhesive.
CONSTITUTION: A modified polyvinyl alcohol copolymer is prepd. by copolymerizing three components consisting of (A) at least one monomer selected from a fatty acid vinyl ester having at least 6 carbon atoms, an alkyl vinyl ester having at least 6 carbon atoms and an α-olefin having at least 8 carbon atoms, (B) at least one monomer selected from an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a lower alkyl ester thereof and an acid anhydride thereof and (C) vinyl acetate, and then saponifying the resulting copolymer under an alkaline condition. The resulting modified polyvinyl alcohol copolymer is incorporated into a formalin condensation resin adhesive. A preferred example of said (A) component is a branched fatty acid vinyl ester wherein the carboxyl gp. is present at an α-position to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom. Preferred examples of the (B) component are maleic anhydride, maleic acid, mono- or dimethyl ester thereof and itaconic acid.
